Yo Frankie! Project – Campbell Barton

This month on Open Gaming Now Campbell Barton (Game Logic and Developer) of the Yo Frankie! project. Yo Frankie! is a fun platformer that is an outgrowth of the Blender Institute (part of the Blender Foundation.) The game was inspired by the movie Big Buck Bunny and has you play the central role of a cute (yet agitated) sugar glider name Frank. Platinum Arts Sandbox – Michael Tomaino

This month on Open Gaming Now we are proud to  have Michael Tomaino of the Platinum Arts Sandbox project.  The Sandbox game maker is a standalone Game Maker and Game Design program for kids and adults alike.  Learning doesn’t have to be boring and Sandbox is a place where a kid (or your inner kid) can be set free in the world of 3D.  It makes it easy to create your very own video games, worlds and cyber adventures.  It’s flexibility, adaptability and ease of use make it a great learning tool for all.  Sandbox is a prime example of video games can be used to educate within the context of a fun and flexible environment.  To see an example game created with Sandbox check out: The Exciting Adventures Of Master Chef Ogro or one of many YouTube videos.  On behalf of the Open Gaming Now staff I want to thank Michael for his contributions.

Open Gaming Now Podcast # 2

Qimo 4 Kids – Michael and Michelle Hall

This month on the Open Gaming Now podcast we have a video interview of Michael and Michelle Hall of the Qimo project.  Qimo is desktop operating system designed for kids (3+) that delivers a engaging and intuitive computing experience.  Packed with a multitude of games and educational software it is perfect for the kids in your life.  It uses games to engage, entertain and kids learn without the tedium.  Games are a unique way to educated and the Qimo project illustrates this quite well.  FOSS games such as GCompris, Childsplay, Etoys, Tuxpaint, TuxType and TuxMath allow for a variety of fun learning experiences.  Qimo is a perfect example of impactful innovation in the FOSS world.  Download it for the kids in your life and see for yourself.

The Qimo project is looking for additional contributors, donations, sponsors to aid its ongoing efforts.  Michael and Michelle Hall also work on bringing computers to special needs and low-income children through non-profit QuinnCo.  Hardware and financial donations to QinnCo are much appreciated.  Personally I applaud Michael and Michelle for their laudable efforts and I encourage you all to support them.

Open Gaming Now Podcast # 1

Lee Vermeulen of the Open Source game Nexuiz

nexuiz_48x48This month I interviewed Lee Vermeulen founder and co-designer of the open source game Nexuiz.  Nexuiz is a fast paced, futuristic multiplayer FPS (First Person Shooter) developed by a team of developers at Alientrap software.  Nexuiz is an outstanding game along the great heritage of Doom/Quake style FPS’s.  The project started back 2005 and its been on a path of outstanding accomplishments.  Just after this interview the newest release 2.5 was made available so be sure to download and frag to your hearts content.  I want to thank Lee and the whole Alientrap/Nexuiz team for all of their great gaming contributions to the FOSS world.  If you enjoy Nexuiz remember you can get involved (join the project), donate or otherwise support its efforts.  Please check out the following resources mentioned in this podcast below.

FOSS Gaming Survey Results

For those of you not aware, I have been been doing numerous speaking engagements on the topic of Open Source gaming over the last year(s).  Part of my goal with these presentations was to address some of the FUD on FOSS games and gaming.  As part of  these investigations,  I got a bit curious (as I usually do) and hence the survey.  My primary efforts with the survey were to gauge community perception surrounding FOSS gaming, and open a productive dialog on the issues surrounding it.  In many discussions with gamers, friends and fellow LUG members I found some uniform misconceptions relating to FOSS games and Linux as gaming platform.  The survey paralleled my efforts with a speech at SCALE, so I went forward gather the FOSS communities collective opinion/wisdom where little to no data existed.  The overwhelmingly positive response of nearly 700 users was quite heartening.   The misconceptions I tested were along 3 common veins: Continued…
